Vijayakanth, the acclaimed Tamil actor and founder of DMDK, passed away in Chennai at 71 after battling illness. Earlier, he was hospitalized and put on ventilator support due to breathing problems. His body was taken home and will soon be moved to the DMDK office.

Previously, he had been admitted to MIOT Hospital in Chennai for 14 days due to cough and throat pain.

Known as 'Captain', Vijayakanth had a successful career in Tamil cinema, featuring in 154 movies before entering politics. He made significant changes in the South film industry during his tenure at Nadigar Sangam.

In 2005, he established the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazgam. Though the party had a humble start in 2006, it gained momentum in 2011 when aligned with the AIADMK, winning 26 out of 41 constituencies and becoming the principal Opposition Party.

Vijayakanth served as the Opposition Leader in the Tamil Nadu Assembly from 2011 to 2016. However, differences led to the DMDK parting ways with AIADMK, losing its opposition status.

He represented Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam constituencies as a Member of the Legislative Assembly twice. However, the party faced setbacks in subsequent elections due to his health issues.
